The role and function of the port in a green transport corridor

Background

There has been significant growth in cargo volumes in recent decades. The growth of general cargo has largely been road-based, leading to a significant increase in the number of trucks on the roads. Current transport solutions and terminal- and warehouse structures are also characterized by road-based logistics.

In the effort to establish green corridors with the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions from transport, ports play a crucial role as logistics centers and energy hubs.

The Port Authorities of Bodø, Harstad, and Tromsø now conduct a pilot study to define the main functions that must be included in the ports’ services and offerings to achieve emission free intermodal transport.

The role of the Ports in green corridors

A green sea route between Bodø and Tromsø has great potential to reduce emissions and decrease the freight transport on challenging roads. The sailing-connection also provide the opportunity to establish good logistics solutions and motivates using zero-emission trucks to and from ports and terminals.

The connection will strengthen emission-free capacity between Northern and Southern Norway and lay the foundation for the establishment of green sea-based transport corridors.

In this pilot, ASKO’s planned green transport corridor between North and South Norway is used as a case study, while ensuring that the concept and solutions are flexible for other future zero-emission vessel concepts.

Pilot study objectives

  • Establish a concept description of the functions/elements that must be included in a green corridor port to meet the needs of ASKO Maritime in the affected ports
  • Identify business opportunities and needs related to the port’s role in green corridors
  • Identify barriers to the ports’ ability to facilitate this type of green corridor

Final goal of the pilot

Carry out the development of the three Port Authorities in Bodø, Harstad, and Tromsø so that they are able to accommodate the needs and requirements necessary to establish green transport corridors for emission-free sea and land transport door-to-door.
