IFE has focus on energy research, new solutions in renwable energy, more energy-efficient industrial processes, zero-emission transport solutions and future-oriented energy systems.
The institute was established in 1948 and has approximately 650 employees as of 2022. The head office is at Kjeller near Lillestrøm in Norway.
IFE holds a license to own and operate nuclear plants and fuel storage facilities in Halden and Kjeller until 2028.
